The Lake Placid Crowne Plaza Project

TA Engineering recently assisted the Bette & Cring Construction Group, a general contractor located in Latham and Watertown, NY. The project involved the construction of a four story addition to The Crowne Plaza Resort & Golf Club located in Lake Placid, New York. The new structure contains 44 rooms and suites and a new laundry.  The hotel is independently owned and operated by Lake Placid Vacation Corporation.

A Design-Build project, TA Engineering provided mechanical and electrical services that included: heating and cooling load calculations, plumbing system design, design review of the proposed electrical system, and submittal reviews of major mechanical and electrical equipment.

The Hotel historically is the headquarters for the US Olympic Hockey Team while it trains in Lake Placid. Recognizing the importance of keeping the Hockey Team happy, a design solution was needed that assured hot water would be available, regardless of when practice ended. The challenge was made greater by the projected operating hours of the laundry operation, which is at least 8 hours a day.

Sr. Design Engineer Nick DiGiacomantonio was intent on providing the Owner with a system that was reliable and met the needs of the occupants and staff. Since the coincidence of the peak hot water system loads could not be assured, separate systems, each with dual water heaters, were designed to serve the laundry and the occupant needs. These are partly shown in the picture. Laundry

The hotel sits on the most prominent parcel in Lake Placid with a commanding view of Mirror Lake. It also offers fantastic views of the lakes and the Adirondack Mountains including Whiteface Mountain. A picture of the completed project that includes architectural features characteristic of Adirondack region structures is also shown below.
